What is a Network Manager?
In an effort to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of maintaining
an expanding network of file and application servers in the district,
we are attempting to centralize equipment and support at the District
Computer Center. In addition to our IBM AS400 the DCC now hosts more than
two dozen servers as we endeavor
to anticipate and respond to the ever-increasing technological needs of
our educational community. It is my responsibility as network manager
to ensure our staff, students, and parents continue to have access to
the online resources they require.
Although I no longer have regularly scheduled visits to our schools
and support sites, I am available to meet with site personnel to
discuss networking, storage, and server issues. I also contribute
both design and content to our DCC
web site which we hope is a valuable technology resource for our district
and the Internet community.
The Schools & Libraries
Division (SLD) of the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC)
is the agency the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has entrusted with
the responsibility of disbursing federal "E-rate" technology funds to
public libraries and schools. If we wish to receive our share of those
funds, the SLD requires we comply with the
Children's
Internet Protection Act (CIPA) to prevent obscene,
pornographic, and harmful Internet content from reaching our computers.
As administrator of our district Internet filtering system and
as a member of our district E-rate team, I attempt to balance
the legislative and administrative concerns (protection & privacy)
for our educational environment
with the libertarian rights (free speech & freedom of information)
guaranteed the citizens of our democratic society.
Current Projects include
network upgrades
and deployment of a district-wide
VoIP network.
