Academic Vocabulary

Studies show that students with a grasp of the academic vocabulary for a discipline have greater success in that subject. This page contains links and information to help students build their academic vocabulary.

  •  The Academic Vocabulary website is created and maintained by the Tennessee State Department of Education. The site has games for Kindergarten through secondary in all subject areas.

  • SuperKids Vocabulary Builder has a "word of the day" for upper elementary, junior high or middle school, and SAT preparation.

  • Check out Merriam-Webster Online for a free dictionary, thesaurus, Spanish-English dictionary, Word of the Day, and many word games that are sure to boost your vocabulary. Word games opens the "Word Game of the Day," but many more can be accessed by clicking More Word Games in the vertical navigation bar on the left-hand side of the page.

  •  Gamequarium features online vocabulary games

  •  Vocabulary University features printable and online vocabulary games on a wide range of subjects.

  •  The Teacher's Desk is a resource designed for 5th and 6th grade teachers and focusing on Language Arts activities and plans. The Spelling and Vocabulary Plans page has many games and activities you can print out and play with your students.

  •  Jefferson Labs maintains a Science Vocabulary Hangman Games page with games for almost any science unit imaginable from general science through microbiology in grades 3-high school.

  •  Syvum offers online multiple choice or printable vocabulary quizzes in a variety of areas, including:

  •  Quia offers a variety of online games including this Algebra Vocabulary game. Search the archive to find any of the more than 5000 other vocabulary games on the site.

  •  Play pinball and learn academic vocabulary at the same time with Vocabulary Pinball.

  •  Freerice.com lets you play an online vocabulary, learn new words, and donate rice through the UN World Food Program all at the same time!

  •  The National Vocabulary Championship website offers links to online vocabulary games on their Fun & Games page. Most of these links are blocked on NPS computers but will work at home.

  •  GSN Games offers Ultimate Word Challenge as a free online game.

  •  Alex Trebek's WordSmart Challenge gives you a chance to test your vocabulary against other players and track your progress. It does not break words into subject specific categories.

  •  Quizlet offers vocabulary games in all subjects. Just take your pick and learn those terms!

  •  Create online comic strips to explain and illustrate your vocabulary terms at MakeBeliefsComix.

  •  The Problem Site has all types of educational games, not just those for vocabulary.
